Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
