A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
